What we do, is almost always done in secret.  We always ask every new client to refrain from telling ANYONE (except their attorney) that they're considering the services of a private  investigator. This process is done because every investigation must be conducted on a "need-to-know' basis, which will be explained in detail at the Scope and Objective interview.
